In Thailand, there are an estimated 4,500 children growing up in government orphanages. Each week, hundreds more enter emergency shelters, which provide temporary emergency care for vulnerable children. This project will develop a nationwide system for supporting families to stay together, so that fewer children need to be taken into care. It will also ensure there are alternative family-based care options available to children living in orphanages giving them the best chance to succeed in life.
In Thailand, there are an estimated 4,500 children growing up in the 29 government orphanages located across the country. Each week, hundreds more enter emergency shelters, which provide temporary emergency care for vulnerable children. Most children in institutional care are placed there not as orphans, but due to poverty; the parents' inability to provide care (in some cases due to poor health); and the perception that better care and education could be provided at an institution.
Our local team will travel across Thailand providing specialised training and support in family-based care to government orphanages and emergency shelters to ensure they can provide the best quality care and support for orphans and vulnerable children. The goal is to ensure families can stay together wherever appropriate, so that fewer children need to be taken into care. It will also ensure there are alternative family-based care options available to children living in institutions.
This project has the potential to impact up to 4,500 orphaned and abandoned children across Thailand, giving them the chance to grow up within local, loving families where they will be nurtured to reach their full potential. It will also benefit hundreds more children by supporting families to stay together wherever appropriate, so that fewer children need to be taken into care.
