Thank you so much for your support of this project supporting vulnerable young people with education, skills, training and resources for a brighter future.
Since our last update a group of teenage mothers from Kipkelion have attended a 3 day business course with Brighter Communities Worldwide in April. They have formed an income generating group to take their training further. These young women met at a Lifeskills training course in February and as is often the case, this inspired them to work together and learn how best to generate an income. The women are interested in sheep rearing because the area where they live in has land that is idle and available for grazing.
The business training course has covered topics including accounting, business principles, marketing, costing, budgeting, record keeping, writing a business plan and banking. Their next step is to submit a business plan to Brighter Communities Worldwide and request the resources they need for their sheep rearing plans. We will continue to support their business ventures wtih network and following up meetings.
April was also a month for the ambassadors of the Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) programme to meet with our staff team and discuss the previous year’s events and activities and make plans for workshops and community sensitisation in the months ahead. The ambassadors deliver community workshops specifically for young people. All SRHR topics are taught and there are practical sessions on making reusable sanitary pads which both boys and girls take part in. These workshops provide the correct facts and knowledge that will enable young people to make positive choices and decisions about their own sexual and reproductive health.
Right now, there is an overseas volunteer team in Kenya and many of the volunteers have assisted with the SRHR programme. Here is a reflection from US Volunteer, Veronica – “I particularly enjoyed helping facilitate the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights workshops. In this, I joined a group of predominantly men and together made reusable menstrual underwear. In doing this, I was amazed at how everyone, particularly the men, were open to discussing menstruation. It was great getting to openly discuss the topic, and we discussed ways of managing menstruation.” 30 participants were booked in for the workshop and 46 turned up on the day showing the interest and appetiteto learn and discuss this important area.
