For close to a century in the developed world, technology has enriched classrooms with exciting and interactive content, encouraging critical thinking and deeper understanding of concepts, and inspiring innovation and creativity. Unfortunately, high costs and poor infrastructure have kept technology tools from benefitting the world's many impoverished, rural schools in the same way.
Looma is an affordable 85 watt audiovisual device that brings the Internet (where available), massive content, and enhanced learning tools to village schools that have never seen electricity, computers, or in some cases, even books. It comes pre-loaded with government textbooks and a rich set of multimedia enhancements. Looma contains a computer, 300 lumen projector, audio system, webcam and microphone, all in one. A simple user interface allows teachers to navigate using a hand-held wand.
VillageTech Solutions is developing Looma to offer an inexpensive but powerful A/V environment within which students and teachers can interact with massive content from the Internet. This will open the window for millions of students to the world, to personal employment ideas, health and hygiene, history, language, role models, conflict resolution, family planning... We will license manufacture and distribution of Looma to qualified social entrepreneurs worldwide to scale it to all schools.
