Dear Friends
Our first three midwifery scholarship students have successfully graduated from their fourth-year program at Bhakti Kencana University. These include Budi, the Lombok clinic manager and her fellow midwives, Isvyanti and Siti.
The Bumi Sehat Lombok clinic continues to strengthen its services for families in West Lombok while ensuring our midwives meet Indonesia’s national standards for professional practice. Three Bumi Sehat midwives have completed their additional training, and we are preparing to support three more midwives through the next round. This extra year of education is now required for midwives who previously completed a three-year program, helping ensure they have the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe, high-quality care and meet the new Health Department standards.
The need for accessible healthcare remains strong in Lombok. While poverty in West Lombok has declined to 11.9%, many families remain economically vulnerable, particularly in rural communities, and access to essential services remains uneven. The devastating 2018 Lombok earthquakes also displaced hundreds of thousands of people and severely disrupted homes, livelihoods and health services. Recovery has continued, but the experience reinforced how important strong, locally based healthcare is when communities face hardship or disaster.
Bumi Sehat’s by-donation model means families can receive care regardless of what they can afford. As services continue to grow, keeping our midwives learning, qualified and licensed is an investment not only in their future, but in the health and resilience of the entire community.
With love and gratitude,
Ibu Robin Lim and Team Bumi Sehat
