We have sent the requested items to Kumamoto since our fundraising started.
There is a request for the home and their group homes to be entirely wired for WIFI so we are continuing to rresaise funds for this. The estimate is $12,000.
While the homes where fall out shelters for the surrounding neighbors during the earhquake, they seemed to compare themselves to the survivors of the Tohoku Tsunami and Earthquake which they felt was much more of a catastrophe then what they experiended in Kumamoto. As a result they have not been as willing to accept more sympathy though I witnessed first hand the amount of structural devastation in our visit there a few months ago.
Aside from replacing broken items which were requested, we also purchased numerous items to help with the children to keep their mind off the anxiety felt around the earthquake and the daily reminders when they walk through town to school at the destruction done in the city center.
Though we have not pushed the home, we created a photo contest with digital cameras for the children to take photos and submit them as a contest.
iPads were purchased at a discount as well as PENCILS being donated by FiftyThree in NY so the children could do art projects.
We continue to stay in touch with the home on updates as there are reports in the news that children, in general, in Kumamoto were beng seen as more agressive and possible still affected from the earthquake.
Needlesstosay, when an earthquake of this magnitude occurs, we are all reminded of how insignificant we are compared to Mother Nature. At the same time, it is very reassuring how many people have shared through donations or desires to volunteer in that common thread that holds us all together.
