25 Years of Building Opportunity at Live and Learn in Kenya International

“Imagine — no more hunger.”

Twenty-five years ago, those words expressed a dream.

A dream that children growing up in poverty in Nakuru, Kenya, could have enough to eat. A dream that they could go to school, receive a good education, be treated with dignity, and have the opportunity to create a different future for themselves.

There was no campus then. No modern classrooms. No kitchen or dining hall. No clinic, laboratory, playground, or day care center.

There was simply a belief that education is the key to the future — a future without poverty or hunger.

Today, that belief has a home.

A Place Where Children Belong

In LLK's early years, education took place wherever space could be found. Rooms were rented, buildings borrowed, and children attended overcrowded schools where broken desks, inadequate facilities, and a lack of security were everyday realities.

LLK could provide support, but there was always something missing: a place created specifically for the children.

That began to change in 2007 when Live and Learn in Kenya International, after registering as an independent NGO in Kenya, took a tremendous step forward.

The vision was ambitious: to create a permanent Education Center where children could learn in safety, receive nutritious meals, have access to health care, develop their talents, play freely, and — perhaps for the first time — experience a true sense of belonging.

It would not happen overnight.

It would be built one step, one building, and one generous act at a time.

Brick by Brick, Year by Year

The first classrooms changed what was possible.

Then came more classrooms. Kitchens and dining facilities followed. Sanitation facilities, offices, a clinic, a library, vocational spaces, laboratories, gardens, playgrounds, and sports areas gradually transformed the grounds into a vibrant Education Center.

Each new building answered a need.

A classroom meant more children could learn.

A kitchen meant children could receive warm meals.

A clinic meant illness or a toothache did not simply have to be endured.

A laboratory opened the door to science.

A workshop offered practical skills.

A playground gave children something every child deserves: the freedom to run, laugh, explore, and play.

And behind every wall, desk, window, book, tree, and piece of playground equipment were people who believed that these children deserved the very best that could be provided for them.

More Than a School

Today, the LLK Education Center is a place filled with life.

Bright classrooms serve children from the youngest grades through Grade 9. Proper desks, books, learning materials, a computer and science laboratory, a tailoring workshop, sports facilities, gardens, and playgrounds create an environment in which children can discover not only what they need to learn, but also what they are capable of becoming.

Yet LLK has never believed that education begins and ends with academics.

A child who is hungry cannot concentrate properly.

A child who is sick needs care.

A child needs movement, creativity, friendship, laughter, and play.

A child needs to feel safe.

That understanding shaped the campus just as much as bricks and mortar did.

Every day, hundreds of children receive nutritious meals prepared in the LLK kitchen. Basic medical and dental care is available through the clinic. Gardens connect education with nutrition and self-reliance. Sports and playgrounds encourage confidence, coordination, teamwork, creativity, and healthy development.

Here, caring for the whole child is part of education.

A New Beginning for the Youngest

One of the newest chapters in the story of the Education Center is the MadPeaPod Day Care Center.

Here, thirty very young children can begin their educational journey in surroundings designed especially for them.

Child-sized facilities, caring teachers, colorful learning spaces, music, outdoor play, and plenty of laughter create a safe and nurturing environment during some of the most important developmental years of a child's life.

For these little ones, LLK is part of their world almost from the very beginning.

They will grow up knowing that school can be a place of warmth, discovery, security, and joy.

The Feeling Behind the Gates

Buildings can be photographed. Classrooms can be counted. Desks, books, computers, and meals can be listed in reports.

But there is something about the LLK Education Center that is much harder to measure.

Visitors often notice it as soon as they walk through the gates.

The campus feels alive.

Children are learning. Someone is cooking. Others are playing football. Little ones are laughing. Teachers are teaching. Staff members are working. Vegetables are growing. Meals are being served.

There is movement, purpose, and possibility everywhere.

What began as a project has become a community.

What began as a dream has become a place where children belong.

Building Was Only the Beginning

Twenty-five years of progress also bring responsibility.

A school is never simply “finished.”

Roofs and walls need maintenance. Classrooms need repairs. Desks and equipment eventually need replacing. Playgrounds must remain safe. Kitchens, sanitation facilities, laboratories, gardens, and other parts of the campus require continual care.

Protecting what has been built is now part of protecting the future of the children who will walk through these gates tomorrow.

Because the Education Center does not belong only to the children who are there today.

It is also being preserved for those who have not yet arrived.

Look What We Built Together

No single person built the LLK Education Center.

It was built by thousands of acts of generosity.

By sponsors and donors.

By volunteers and friends.

By local workers and staff.

By people who paid for bricks, desks, books, windows, playground equipment, water systems, meals, trees, and countless other necessities.

Some gave a great deal. Others gave what they could.

Together, they created something extraordinary.

You did not simply build classrooms.
You created places where children discovered they could learn.

You did not simply build a kitchen.
You created a place where hunger could be answered with a warm meal.

You did not simply build a clinic.
You showed children that their health matters.

You did not simply build a playground.
You gave children space to laugh, move, imagine, and simply be children.

You did not simply build an Education Center.

You built opportunity.
You built dignity.
You built belonging.
You helped build a future.

Twenty-five years ago, we dared to imagine.

Today, we can walk through the gates and see what that dream became.
