Just a quick announcement to all of our GlobalGiving supporters--we will be closing out our Little Green Fingers project on the GlobalGiving platform at the end of this month.

We cannot thank our GlobalGiving supporters enough for the $1,890 raised since we created this GlobalGiving project in 2013. To date, the funds have been spent on critical ongoing programming for our gardeners throughout the seven Little Green Fingers community gardens. It has helped us provide gardening classes taught by master gardeners and hands-on cooking and nutrition classes for parents and children to enjoy together. The funds have also gone toward leadership development trainings where gardeners from each of our gardens meet quarterly to build their skills in garden management, conflict resolution, grant writing, etc. with the goal of eventually independently sustaining and operating the gardens themselves.

Although we are leaving GlobalGiving, our Little Green Fingers program still lives on! After building seven beautiful community gardens from Koreatown to Lancaster to Pasadena, we are in the midst of developing our eighth and final garden in Los Angeles County and hope to announce more details soon. Springing Up More New Gardens!

June Leadership Academy Meeting

We've been very busy since our last update!

In late March, we held our very first Leadership Academy. This newly-established quarterly gathering of leaders from each of our community gardens, is designed to share best practices on effective garden management. It's also a great opportunity for the gardeners to network with their contemporaries. Our second-ever Leadership Academy was held in late June.

The Little Green Fingers Collaborative also completed the build on our new community garden -- the seventh of eight planned gardens -- located at the East Wilmington Greenbelt Park. During each of the build days, we had countless volunteers from the Wilmington area, as well as the "Friends of Baby Buggy" volunteers and Councilman Joe Buscaino enthusiastially helping to bring this new garden to life!

The progress of this garden has also attracted the attention of Potential Industries. Potential Industries is a Wilmington-based recycling company and they recognized the need to support the local community and provide access to fresh fruits and vegetables to Wilmington residents. They are helping to provide tools and other supplies to the gardeners to ensure they have what they need to make the garden a success.

The Wilmington gardeners will be holding their first garden leadership meeting for the end of July!

Last, but certainly not least, on Saturday, May 30th, the Little Green Fingers Collaborative celebrated the grand opening of East Los Angeles' very first community garden. Located at the Eastmont Community Center, this garden is the sixth of eight planned gardens as part of the First 5 LA grant.

The grand opening was a rousing success. We heard stories from some of the gardeners and our distinguished guests, which included Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, representatives from the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis, and Cynthia Harding, Interim Director of Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Throughout the day, though, many families shared that this garden not only allows them to grow together as a family and learn how to sustain themselves with a healthier lifestyle, but they can build friendships with neighbors and have a safe place for their children to play.

We are closing in on our eight and final garden. As soon as we have more details, we will be sure to share it with you. In the meantime, we are so thankful for supporting our growth and our mission to help local families live healthier lifestyles.

A New Little Green Fingers Garden Is Due To Sprout

Since our last update, community members and leaders,LA Conservation Corps corpsmembers, Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust and the California Conservation Corps.(C.C.C.) came together to build Eastmont Community Garden, the very first Little Green Fingers community garden in East Los Angeles. Community members expressed their gratitude for bringing such a positive and much needed addition to the neighborhood, and we, in turn, are so thankful for the community's involvement to bring this new garden to life. The next time you're in the area, be sure to stop by and see all the hard work everyone contributed to this beautiful new space! (Eastmont Community Center - 701 Hoefner Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012)

Our next community garden will be popping up in the City of Wilmington starting next month. This garden, the seventh of eight planned Little Green Fingers gardens, will be installed at the East Wilmington Greenbelt Park. Little Green Fingers, DakeLuna, Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust, and representatives from Councilman Joe Buscaino's office held three interactive design workshops so that Wilmington residents could share their needs and goals for the new space, and provide input into how the new garden should look and function.

Now that the third and final garden workshop to review, refine and approve design plans is complete, the next step is the garden build! Stay tuned for details on our community build day.
