Autism prevalence rates are at an all time high of 1 in every 68 children being diagnosed on the spectrum. In the last 12 months alone, the Family Autism Center at The Arc of South Norfolk has seen an increase in the number of people we provide services to- we now serve 652 people with Autism. With no increase in funding from The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, it is becoming harder to serve all of the families looking for guidance and support.
With funding for Supporting People with Autism Spectrum Disorders, we will be able to supplement an already stretched budget to help cover the cost of staff in our Family Autism Center. Staff are the key to the success of our program. We receive endless calls from families looking for guidance, support, and direction in navigating the service arena. They truly make the difference in the lives of the families we serve by providing encouragement and the tools needed to obtain services.
With these additional funds, we will partially fill a budget gap we have in funding sources to cover staff salaries. Staff work countless hours answering the phones, running support groups, running social and recreational programs that are specialized for people diagnosed with Autism, as well as hosting trainings and educational seminars for families and professionals relative to Autism. Funds will help serve the 652 people that are affiliated with Family Autism Center and their families.
