Dear Valued Donors and Strategic Partners,
Literacy is the single most fundamental driver of all the transformative changes education brings to humanity. It is the master key to human dignity, self-reliance, and economic mobility. Global data consistently proves a staggering truth: simply teaching a child to read and write has the power to lift 171 million people out of systemic poverty.
At the Boys Mentoring Advocacy Network (BMAN), our mission has been to aggressively expand our Literacy Project across underserved urban and rural communities, equipping vulnerable, at-risk children with the language proficiency they need to build meaningful futures.
However, I am writing to you today with a heavy heart during what is the most fragile season in this project's history. Due to a total deficit in funding and the severe economic challenges on the ground, we were forced to pause our weekly literacy sessions this past quarter. Without an immediate influx of support, this project is on the verge of shutting down completely.
This report provides a transparent update on our current crisis, the human cost of this silence, and our urgent plea to rescue this vital educational lifeline before it is lost.
The Core Curriculum: A 5-Pillar Lifeline
Our structured literacy interventions are intentionally designed to transform struggling, marginalized youth into confident, articulate communicators. Our program is anchored around five foundational linguistic pillars:
Writing Skills Development: Moving children from basic letter formation to structured, coherent creative and analytical writing.
Reading Recovery Programs: Delivering targeted, intensive intervention for children who have fallen years behind their age-appropriate reading levels.
Speaking Skills Development: Building vocabulary, correct articulation, and vocal confidence to empower children to speak up for themselves.
Comprehension Skills & Strategies: Teaching active textual analysis, moving beyond surface decoding to foster deep critical thinking.
Listening Skills Development: Training auditory processing, attention span, and the ability to digest and execute complex instructions.
The Quarter in Review: Operational Pause and Financial Strain
During this past quarter, the severe macroeconomic pressures in our local operating environments, combined with a sharp decline in incoming donations, created an insurmountable financial obstacle.
The Reality on the Ground:
Session Pause: We were forced to suspend our regular 4-hour weekly literacy classes that previously served as an educational and safe haven for scores of at-risk boys and girls in urban and rural hubs.
Logistical Breakdown: Rising baseline operational costs—including learning materials, tutor stipends, center utilities, and transportation—made it impossible to sustain center operations without incurring unmanageable debt.
Risk of Permanent Closure: This project is now standing at a precipice. Without immediate financial intervention, we will be forced to permanently decommission our literacy hubs and release our teaching staff.
The Human Cost of an Empty Classroom
When a literacy class closes its doors in an impoverished community, the consequences are immediate and severe:
Academic Slippage: For an at-risk child undergoing reading recovery, a hiatus of even a few months can erase years of literacy gains, pushing them back into functional illiteracy.
Loss of Safe Haven: The weekly 4-hour block was not just a class; it was a safe environment that protected vulnerable boys from street socialization, child labor, and criminal influences.
Broken Promises: Dozens of families across rural and suburban sectors who were waiting for their children to be enrolled are now left without options or hope for academic support.
Emergency Action Plan: How We Can Save the Project
We refuse to give up on these children while there is still a chance to act. Our leadership team has outlined a lean, emergency stabilization plan to prevent a permanent shutdown and resume classes in the coming quarter:
Emergency Operational Grant: Securing immediate core funding to clear outstanding operational overhead and reactivate our literacy hubs.
Micro-Sponsorship Model: Creating direct donor-to-child adoption pipelines, allowing individual donors to sponsor a child's complete literacy material and tutoring kit for a term.
How You Can Help Us Keep the Pages Turning
We are making an urgent appeal to institutional funders, corporate partners, and individual donors. Your support right now will directly determine whether this project survives or shuts down.
We urgently need funding for:
Student Literacy Kits: Workbooks, decodable reading materials, pens, and exercise books.
Tutor & Facilitator Stipends: Re-engaging trained literacy educators to lead the weekly 4-hour intensives.
Hub Infrastructure & Logistics: Covering baseline utility and transit costs to keep the doors open.
Conclusion: A Choice Between Darkness and Light
We extend our deep gratitude to all donors who have supported BMAN’s literacy interventions in the past. You have seen firsthand how learning to read transforms a timid, at-risk boy into a confident scholar.
We cannot allow economic hardship to steal the gift of literacy from these children. With your immediate, emergency support, we can pull this project back from the brink, reopen our classrooms next quarter, and continue lifting children out of poverty—one word at a time.
With urgent hope and determination,
Ola
