Explorador Camp
Explorador Camp

Bienestar has been hard at work this past summer to continue our commitment to helping the 1,065 children we serve through the Listos Para Vida/Ready for Life Innitiatve. Through Homework Clubs, Science Clubs, Financial Literacy Classes, Summer Lunch & Fun, Summer Reading Safari, Nutrition Classes, PlayWrite, Soccer clubs, Kids Computer Clubs, Explorador Nature Camp, and other programs, we seek to help our children experience academic success and move past their parents’ education levels (average 7th grade).  We are building a community of caring role models that we hope will prevent teenage pregnancies, gang involvement, and encourage post secondary education.

Highlights from the summer include

  • 4,980 healthy lunches served to children during the nine week Summer Lunch and Fun program.
  • In partnership with the Audubon Society of Porland, 96 children were able to participate in multiple week-long Explorador Camps through which they experienced the natural beauty of Canon Beach, Jackson Bottom Wetlands, the Tillamook Forest and more.
  • PlayWrite came to bienestar again in 2011, giving six young residents the opportunity to share their stories through theater. With the help of professional playwrites, the children developed their own short plays that told their story and were then acted out to a live audience by trained actors.
  • 108 backpacks and school supplies were given to Bienestar children in preperation for the school year.
  • 35 children honed their skills and gained confidence on the soccerfield through participaing in soccer club.
  • Elm park, one of Bienestar's farmworker housing properties, held its first basketball club for children. It was much apprecietd and well attended with 25 participants.

Outcome reports for all of these programs and more are available on our website: http://bienestar-or.org/web/programs/youth.asp

Bienestar is committed to supporting and improving the lives of  the children of migrant workers, farmworkers and low-income working families. We thank you for your support!
