Lighting a Billion Lives - Update July 2011

By Smita Marcus | Research Associate

Ever since the commissioning of the LaBL solar charging stations, the villagers have seen positive changes in their lives. Young students have in particularly been benefited with the solar lanterns. Many villagers exclaim with joy to quote that their children can study for longer hours in the evening. The lanterns have helped many aspiring students in the villages to fare well in their examination. Besides, the women are also quite exhilarated with the new light in their lives. Cooking has become far easier for them who remark that earlier they could barely see what they were cooking. With the improved light, they can complete their work on time and utilize their evening optimally. They get more time after their household work in the evenings.  For many grocery shop owners and small vendors who otherwise would have to close their shops after dark, the lantern has made it possible to operate till late in the evening thereby paving the way for earning better income. This has improved their efficiency and along with other villagers, they are thankful for the support extended under the initiative.
