Light for Children believes that all adolescents in the Kumasi Metropolitan should feel empowered to protect themselves against sexual assault. All adolescents should feel comfortable enough to speak freely about past sexual assault experiences, with the confidence that they have a strong community support network.
Currently the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the prevalence of sexual assault on boys and girls under 18 years old is 7% and 14% respectively. This violence can have devastating impact on children inculding risks of lifelong health, social, emotional and cognitive problems.
How we're making change in the Kumasi region:- - Defining child sexual assault - Introducing a new personal safety skill, of protecting oneself from situations that could lead to sexual abuse - Defining “Yes” feelings, “No” feelings, and “Confusing Touch”, and practice how to express such feelings through role-play - Differentiating between the facts and misconceptions relating to child sexual abuse - Facilitating open discussions about issues related to sexual abuse - Engaging school children and faculty together in discussions to create a safe environment for children to seek support and advocacy in the case of sexual assault.
In an impressive four days in January, a group of 10 volunteers reached out to seven schools, 34 classes and over 1,300 children. In total so far we can proudly say that local and international interns and volunteers have educated 2,800 adolescents!!
Six interns from the University of Hong Kong are currently working hard to reach out to even more school children over their two-month stay in Ghana. We'll keep you updated on our progress.
Over half way to our target of 4,000 children!!
