Light up a home in Zimbabwe is a project to connect residents to the main electricity grid, freeing them from the risky burden of fetching and using smoky fuels, that cause fatal breathing diseases. Often about 1000 women and girls of Chipindura Park, Bindura, are exposed to injuries, rape, snake bites as they fetch firewood for cooking, lighting and warming.
Zimbabwe has 60% of its population submerged in energy poverty especially the rural areas and the Peri-urban settlements. Women and girls in Chipindura Park spend many hours looking for firewood or other forms of biomass for cooking and warming.These fuels are generally smoky polluting the air and expose the residents to fatal respiratory diseases.Darkness at night exposes the residents to danger of thieves and muggers.Nearby forests are being depleted.
Light up a home in Zimbabwe provides modern electricity to residents of Chipindura Park.The women and girls can use the hours spent fetching firewood for other productive chores in the home like study for the girl children. They are saved from pricks, cuts, rape , respiratory diseases.The residents will have access to information, news and entertainment from radios, TVs, Internet etc. Street lighting reduces crime . Residents will do extra work at home.The standard of living will be raised.
We eradicate energy poverty among 1000 women and girls by connecting them to electricity. Time will be saved and used to do other work ; study laundry and income generating projects. They are more informed as they connect to the internet, radios and TVs. Respiratory diseases, injuries, rape, and snake bites are reduced. Air pollution and global warming are reduced thereby contributing to positive climate change. Forests will regenerate.
