In partnership with the World Food Programme in Sierra Leone, Unite to Light will create Light Libraries in 200 schools so that students can "check out" a solar light to take home and complete their homework after dark. Access to solar lights improve educational outcomes, and "Light Libraries" are an efficient use of funds as many students can share one light.
Only 26 percent of the population of Sierra Leone has access to electricity. The lack of electricity has negative implications for education as it limits the time children can give to their studies. Some children to wake up at sunrise to complete their homework, which is not conducive to their learning later in the day. Lack of electricity limits their ability to learn and perform academically. This project will help more than 10,000 students access solar lights.
This project will create Light Libraries in 200 schools so that students can check out a solar light when needed, especially during exam times. This will increase the time the students can spend on their homework and learning, beyond daylight hours. When they are done with the light, the student will return it to the school so the next student can use that same light.
This project will provide access to clean, renewable light to 10,000 students and enable them to complete school assignments; enhancing their education and contributing to positive learning outcomes. We know that when students have access to solar lights they are more likely to continue their education and pass exams. This keeps them in school longer and allows them to rise out of poverty, improve health and well-being.
