If every student completes their high school education then poverty in Costa Rica could drop a 50%. It is so important to make an effort to help youth to stay in school. At Lifting Hands we provide academic psychological, health and community development daily support. We have more than 85 courses per week, including psychological full time support!
Right now only 46 of every 100 students finishes their high school studies. We have found out that most kids in the community have parents that never finished high school or even elementary school. So when their kids come to their parents asking for help to solve a mathematical or english homework, most parents don't know how to help them. Kids feel that they aren't good in school because they don't have somebody helping them or encouraging them at home and in many cases they drop out of school.
Through volunteers that donate 1 hour a week we provide academic, psychological and nutritional support to children in the community. We have found that just having someone sitting with the kids connecting, caring for them and modeling good values makes a huge difference. The kids feel encourage and they start to believe that they can be the first member in their family to go to university and even inspire other kids from the community to do the same. We also provide tools for their parents.
If every student completes their high school education then poverty in Costa Rica could drop 50%. This means less crime, less violence, less social inequality, less investment in social programs in the future, more professionals in the market, more people paying taxes, in general a better society.
