We are a research and humanitarian organization that provides world class psychological interventions to poor and disabled youths. "LifeMatters" our 10-session program teaches psychological skills through active participation and physical activities. Research evidence shows our program promotes physical- and mental health, academic achievement, self-esteem, and personal growth. We develop prosocial youths into citizens with agency who contribute to their own lives and their community.
South Africa has many poor and under-resourced communities. Youths from these communities are disengaged from positive influences and development opportunities. There are few safe and accessible evidence based youth development programs. With limited quality programming and after school activities youths become engaged in maladaptive behaviors (alcohol, drugs, gangs, and risk sexual behavior). Youths need role models, opportunities to learn skills, and to develop prosocial friendships.
The 'LifeMatters' intervention introduces new patterns of behavior that breaks the cycle of maladaptive behaviors that stem from an unsupportive environment. We provide positive role models who create an inclusive and supportive environment for learning and development. Participants create meaningful friendships and develop prosocial behavior. Participants learn psychological skills, life skills, and competencies that promote holistic well-being.
Youths learn psychological and self-regulatory skills that they will use for life. Participants develop competencies such as communication, problem solving, and teamwork which help them at school and in future employment. Published and ongoing research shows the considerable benefits of the program. Partnerships with local schools and community stakeholders ensure upskilling of staff and longevity of the program. Youth from the community will be employed to facilitate the program in the future.
