Spreeha’s Adolescent Girls' Club (AGC) activities aim to develop life skills, leadership qualities, and provide accurate information and facilities to girls aged 10-19.
120 girls were enrolled in the Spreeha AGC in Dhaka and Meherpur to empower them with rights-based knowledge to overcome social barriers caused by their gender, economic status, and class, and to secure a better future for themselves. 228 AGC sessions were held in Meherpur and 213 in Dhaka, with an average participation rate of 73% of club members.
A learning module consisting of twelve chapters was developed and distributed among the AGC girls, which they completed with the help of an instructor.
The AGC sessions covered topics such as self-expression, puberty, menstrual hygiene, reproductive health, child development, and rights as adolescents. The club also served as a tool to prevent child marriage, as members learned about its harmful consequences and shared this information with their parents.
Here is Neela's story:
Neela is a member of AGC in Rayerbazar, along with 10 other girls. Neela attends AGC sessions once a week. With lifelong skills and rights, they also discuss their dreams:
"I love the self-reflection chapter in my AGC book – the first chapter our instructor, Sharmin Apu, introduced us with! Now I know, I am a girl and that is my strength! I can do anything if I put my mind and heart to it. This has helped me so much to know myself as an individual."
Neela is an active member of AGC and she is now a student at Moahmmadpur Mahila College where she studies business. Her passion is to become a makeup artist and owning her own beauty salon one day. With the help of her AGC group, she feels more equipped to navigate the challenges of her adult life. She believes that many girls in her community can benefit from a safe platform like AGC where they can learn about themselves and aspire to dream big.
Stories like hers is what motivate Spreeha to reach out to more girls like Neela and make an impact in their journey.
