Dear Friends,
You must have had a great Holiday Season. We also have been very busy with children’s parties and creative activities for them in 17 different communities. Today Vacha Team wishes you best wishes for the New Year and for all of us in the world peace and harmony.
December began with a meeting on Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls. People working on this issue in several centres in North and South India came together to strategies that work. Vacha encouraged girls to speak from their experience and perspective at this national event. More girls worked in a foyer event where they attended creative workshops to produce material on the topic and displayed it to share it with all.
Once again Umang group, an off shoot of Vacha and now an autonomous group organized a rally to highlight need for a safe and secure environment for girls. Almost 500 joined the rally for with dozens of girls as well as boys had worked. Vacha provided background support. These young people have been trained by Vacha and they now have created their own group.
In another project with 8 groups coordinated by Vacha over 800 girls participated in a sports event. Public sports are denied to girls generally as their visibility itself is denied in various ways by several communities. Girls greatly enjoyed playing the national game kabaddi as well as cricket, football and smaller team and individual games. Mayor of Mumbai attended the event and girls made a presentation to her about their problems of scarcity of various resources such as good water supply, general safety, public toilets and many other things. They displayed photographs they had taken. They also made presentations to the high level police personnel who came to talk to girls.
Thanks for your support and also for the special contribution some of you have made for this Christmas and New Year.
