Empowering Young Minds through LSBE

By Ambreen Abdul Karim | Program Specialist

At Zindagi Trust, we believe education is more than just academics—it’s about shaping young minds, building confidence, and preparing students for real-life challenges. Our LSBE program is at the heart of this mission, helping children develop essential life skills, emotional intelligence, and a strong sense of self-worth. Over the past few months, we’ve focused on teacher training, student engagement, and expanding our curriculum, ensuring that every child feels safe, heard, and empowered.

Supporting Teachers: Learning Never Stops

Teachers are at the frontlines of education, and their growth is key to nurturing a classroom. To support them, we held specialized training sessions on mental health, climate change, and child protection.

  • A session on Climate Change and Mental Health, led by a PhD candidate from Trinity College Dublin, helped teachers understand how emotions shape learning and provided age-appropriate ways to discuss feelings with students. The session also emphasized why climate change matters and how teachers can integrate environmental awareness into daily lessons.
  • A Child Protection Policy and Reporting Mechanisms session was conducted to help teachers identify and support students facing physical bullying or gender-based harassment. They learned how to implement child protection policies, guide students in reporting incidents, and create a safe and supportive environment for all.

This training strengthened the teachers’ capacity to handle sensitive topics with care, provide emotional support to students, and ensure classrooms remain safe spaces for learning.

A Teacher’s Story: When Learning Becomes Real

One of our Grade 1 teachers shared a heartwarming story about how a simple lesson on personal belongings safety made a big difference in her students' lives:

"After our discussion on taking care of personal belongings, I saw real changes in my students' habits. One girl proudly showed me her neatly organized stationery box, explaining how she had cleaned and arranged everything. Another student, who used to lose her water bottle often, wrote her name on it to make sure it didn’t get mixed up with others. One child even told me how she went home and washed all her toys and her water bottle. These small changes showed how deeply they connected with the lesson and how proud they were of their newfound responsibility."

Moments like these reinforce the importance of LSBE—it’s not just about learning concepts, but about shaping habits, building responsibility, and empowering students to make meaningful changes in their daily lives.

What We Taught: Building Skills for Life

From November to January, we focused on a wide range of practical, real-world lessons that help students build self-awareness, problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence.

  • Grade 1: Understanding emotions, recognizing key school staff, caring for personal belongings, basic computer use, and friendship skills.
  • Grade 2: Expressing thoughts with “I” statements, understanding private vs. non-private body parts, learning about a balanced diet, and exploring diversity through global clothing styles.
  • Grade 3: Practicing table manners, setting up a table, making a salad, understanding citizenship, and improving computer skills.
  • Grade 4: Learning about discrimination, using smartphones for learning, digital research skills, managing screen time, fostering positive social interactions, and recognizing common ailments.
  • Grade 5: Understanding human rights, digital etiquette (netiquette), identifying trustworthy online sources, recognizing phishing scams, learning from positive role models, and dealing with physical bullying.
  • Grade 6: Managing resources effectively, caring for animals, understanding differing opinions, discussing sex vs. gender, and recognizing physical abuse.
  • Grade 7: Learning about harassment and its impact, coping with emotional abuse, promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment, writing emails, and managing a digital footprint.
  • Grade 8: Exploring plagiarism, artificial intelligence, career paths, goal setting, career planning, and CV writing.

Each of these topics is designed to prepare students for life beyond the classroom, helping them grow into responsible, empathetic, and capable individuals.

Tackling Sensitive Topics with Care

Some conversations are tough, but they’re also the most important. We create safe spaces where students can ask questions, share concerns, and learn about critical topics in a supportive and respectful way.

  • Breaking Gender Stereotypes: In Grade 6, students explored the difference between sex and gender, challenging outdated beliefs and encouraging inclusivity and respect.
  • Addressing Bullying and Abuse: Lessons in Grades 5 and 6 helped students understand physical bullying and physical abuse, equipping them with strategies to seek help and protect themselves and others.
  • Navigating the Digital World: In Grades 5 and 7, students learned about digital safety, responsible internet use, and how to protect themselves from online scams.

These lessons are designed not just to educate but to empower students to advocate for themselves and others, creating a culture of respect, kindness, and awareness.

Preparing for the Future

As students grow, they need guidance on career paths, digital literacy, and communication skills. Some of the key areas we focused on were:

  • Digital Literacy: Teaching students how to use technology wisely, research effectively, and engage safely in online spaces.
  • Self-Expression & Communication: Developing confidence in writing emails, using “I” statements, and preparing CVs.
  • Career Exploration: Helping Grade 8 students explore different career options, set goals, and create a path for their future.

Introducing these lessons early ensures students feel confident, prepared, and capable of taking control of their futures.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next?

The LSBE program is more than just a curriculum—it’s a movement to create resilient, self-aware, and capable young individuals. In the coming months, we aim to:

  • Strengthen child protection policies to ensure that every student feels safe and supported.
  • Enhance digital literacy and career readiness programs to prepare students for the modern world.
  • Foster leadership and self-advocacy so students can confidently make decisions for themselves and their communities.

Every day, in every classroom, we see the impact of LSBE on the smiles, confidence, and curiosity of our students. This program is shaping not just their education but their futures. And we couldn’t be prouder to be a part of their journey.
