Identifying Learning Difficulties

Thank you to all who supported our efforts to introduce lifelong learning skills training to our beneficiaries in Malawi through our year-end campaign!

In December, through EKARI's Mentorship Program, Patrick, a local university lecturer qualified and experienced in critical thinking skills training, worked with 26 EKARI sponsored high school youth to further identify their learning difficulties.

Patrick noted that a number of the students fail to retain what they learn. The main reason can be attributed to poor study skills. In order to address this, Patrick showed the students how to monitor their reading by reflecting on what they have read. He trained them to read small amounts of text, write a summary of what they read, and then report to a friend.

In addition, Patrick worked with the students regarding how to approach exam questions using critical thinking and problem solving skills rather than memorization.

Moreover, several students, including Chisomo, received individual counseling from Patrick to address their specific learning difficulties. Chisomo stated, "I have benefitted a lot from the sessions so much that I will apply the skills I have been taught in my day to day school life."
