Update- December 2017

Last 3 months is very important period for us.  In a landmark judgement of Supreme court of India on 11th October 2017 held that sexual intercourse by a man with his wife who is below 18 years of age is rape.  They said, “The human rights of a girl child are very much alive and kicking whether she is married or not and deserve recognition and acceptance.” They also said there is violation of right to equality and discrimination of married girl between 15-18 years of age. The supreme court rejected the Centre Governments argument that child marriage has become a reality in India that cannot be wished away and the at sexual intercourse with wife below 18 years is not an offence.  The judgement gives hope to girls to assert their rights and to end child marriage. This would reduce child marriages.  As part of our Sexual Reproductive Health Rights education we have initiated discussions with adolescent girls in our area about this judgement, their opinion about the judgement. We have also continued about education on sexuality education.   Another major event is the 16 days Activism to end violence against women from 25th November International Day for the elimination of violence against women to 10th December International Human Rights Day.  Our Snehidhi adolescent girls’ association members took lead and organized street plays and discussions in 30 slums to educate people about the importance of eliminating violence against women and girls for equality and development. More than 10,000 people were reached though this campaign. In collaboration with ‘Prajnya’ a women’s organization We have also organized a workshop ‘Sing and Change’ 25 girls participated in this workshop.  They wrote their songs with the theme of Women and Girl Children’s Rights and with the help of a musician they developed the tune for their songs and it was used in the Campaigns.

In addition to this as part of our lifeskill programme weekend workshops were conducted and 125 girls benefitted from this programme.  A group of 25 girls visited Taj Coramandal 5 star hotel and learned about the careers in hospitality industry.  For the slum girls this is the first time visit to a five-star hotel and a good learning experience for them.  Taj hotel staffs also conducted Yoga classes during the visit.  Another group of 40 girls attended a workshop on health and hygiene in Hotel ITC grand another 5 hotel.  More than health and hygiene learning the girls enjoyed the 5 star environment and it is a good experience for them.

In addition to our computer skill training in Velacherry slum we have started providing training on Tally an accounting software, 7 college going girls are attending this course, this would help them get employment in office administration and account related jobs.  As part of Daan Utsav – Joy of giving week, a fund raising event during organized all over India. Our staff and adolescent girls set up a stall as part of Save Mela to educate about CWDR’s work and Snehidhi, it was also a learning experience for the girls. As part of Daan Utsav girls have prepared sandwiches and distributed among beggers, old people on the street and in old age homes, it is something they enjoyed and also learned the joy of giving.   During this period, we have also initiated a supplementary nutrition that is providing drinking milk for children particularly girl children to help them overcome malnourishment and build their immunity.   December month is bad month for Chennai city During 2015 it faced the mega floods and during 2016 the Vardha cyclone, most of slums were affected by these disasters and most of the families of adolescent girls were also affected. A disaster preparedness workshop was conducted for adolescent girls in the slums where the disaster damages were high.  80 girls attended these workshops. Luckily this year nothing serious happened in Chennai city, but the southern districts of Tamilnadu is affected by ‘Oki’ cyclone, more than 1000 fishermen are missing.
