Life skill, Sexuality Education for 1000 girls-India

Update February 2020

Recently a study by Thomson Reuters foundation on The World's most dangerous countries for women, ranked India in the 1st place.  If you open any newspaper or News channel, we can see at least one news about rape, abuse, violence against women and girl children. Day by Day the abuse and crime against girl children and women are increasing.  It is really shocking for us. Recently in one of the schools from our working slums, a girl from 11th standard, aged 16 years shared to her teacher and our field worker how she has been abused by her own father from the age of 7 with the support of her mother.  It was a shock for the school teachers and requested us to help them find out such girls who are silently suffering. Of course, we have handled the cases with the help of Childline and the police.  But we realised our limitations, and need of equipping the school teacher and field staff to handle such situations.  We are also in the process of redesigning our lifeskill and sexuality education for adolescent girls.

Last 3 months is an important period for our fundraising activities and were busy with that, of course we were not very successful but is a good learning experience, maybe we can improve our fundraising in the coming years. We have been continuing our life skill and sexuality education successfully, but because of financial restrictions we could continue our computer skill training programme.  Girl children started sharing their abuse experiences with the school teachers and our field workers.  School teachers and some extend we also focus more on their academic achievements, so helping the affected girl children become a new challenge for us. We are looking for volunteers who can provide counselling, we are also in the process of updating the skills of our field workers and the school teachers to help girl children.

Mr.Senthil from Amazon continued his lifeskill workshops with the adolescent girls, 50 girls benefitted from this.  We also continued our sexuality education and sexual rights education in the schools, nearly 600 boys, girls and 15 school teachers benefitted from these programmes.  We have started the supplementary education tuition classed for 10 and 12th standard girls because the board examinations are nearing in March/April months.  240 girls from our rural working villages are benefitting from these English, science, Mathematics tuition classes. We were planning to conduct supplementary tuition classes for 5th and 8th standard girl students because recently the Government of Tamilnadu announced they are planning to conduct board examination for 5th and 8th standard classes, because of the opposition from parent and CSOs-Civil Society Organizations they withdrew and cancelled it now.

We have been conducting parents meeting once in a month, but mostly mothers only attend these meetings.  We are also working with only women.  After seeing the increase in the violence and abuse against girl children we are making attempts to motivate fathers to attend these meetings.  We are also in the process of working with boys to involve in prevent and eliminate abuse and violence against girl children.  Particularly educate about the impact of eve teasing of girl children  and how it affects them, helping them to understand that every girl child is a sister of some boys, and treat girls how they treat their own sisters.

We are really happy about our progress and achievements but when we come across the information that abuse against girls are increasing  we understand that we have miles go, but we are happy that we are on the right track.
