Dear Friend of YOUPSA,
Children are a true source of inspiration! They are filled with potential, talents, love and joy. YOUPSA meets the same children every week, and we keep the groups small (maximum 14) so that we can get to know each individual well and develop long-lasting and trusting relationships.
There are approximately 4,200 children under the age of 19 in our area. We so wish we could take all of the neighborhood children into our groups - but this is impossible. There has never been any continuous program or upliftment for young people in the history of this area. Unfortunately, children are the most neglected and forgotten in society.
You should see how these young people glow when we all arrive for a session! They know that something special is about to happen.
Last week, one child who is normally very shy, and was in a difficult state for months when she first joined our group, came up to the facilitator spontaneously and said “I am so happy to be part of this group!" We regularly receive feedback from the children, spoken and unspoken, in their actions and demeanor, that our program is healing, brings immense joy, and deeply impacts their lives. We could not be more proud when the children recite all the verses that they have learned in our program this year, in one go, bring their math cards to show us how they can solve the difficult ones, or display their newly acquired skills.

Making lion masks
If you wear a mask, nobody will know it is you...
Making lion masks in the YOUPSA groups ignites imagination, excitement, creativity and humor.
Each child's individual personality came through in their masks. When they tried it on, everyone made their biggest roar!
Amazing things happen when you give young people freedom, a safe environment, creative opportunities, and reliable and trusting relationships. We love watching our children self-organize and work together harmoniously.
For each child to create their own mask is a lot of work, applying many different skills. They are very proud of their accomplishment!

Creating 3D heart cubes
In the YOUPSA programs we design many engaging, hands-on crafts to build the childrens' skills. Creating 3D heart cubes combines speaking, cutting and folding, fine and gross motor skills, as well as STEM skills, all in one!
After carefully cutting out a template, each child colored this in beautifully and folded the cube precisely. At the top of each heart, they wrote the name of a friend. The sides of each cube got glued together. It was so exciting to assemble the cube and see the flat paper transform into a 3D object.
The game is to make a statement about what activity you intend to do with a friend, and then roll the dice. The name on top will be the friend you will do it with.

Giving books is giving love!
On 14th February we celebrated International Book Giving Day by giving a book to each child in our YOUPSA groups. The children were thrilled and could hardly believe receiving such a gift. It is the first book many of them have ever owned.
Before joining the YOUPSA programs, children in rural areas have no access to books. They do not encounter a book for reading for pleasure, neither in school nor at home. There are no libraries far and wide.
Everyone read their new book and then enjoyed reading the stories together with their friends.
Thank you to the friends of YOUPSA who supported this special day. You brought reading magic and joy to so many children!

Memory challenge
How strong is your memory? We love using educational games to bring about mental strength, team-work and other vital skills.
Memory games help children improve their ability to pay attention, recognize, remember and recall information. One must pay attention and memorize patterns. This trains the brain to form associations. Players are required to plan their moves ahead and anticipate consequences.
Many children in our programs are deeply affected by various forms of trauma and therefore have difficulty focusing. But from their active participation in our special activities and the peaceful, nurturing environment that we provide, the childrens' memory and cognitive functioning skills improve immensely within a short space of time.
