Futuro Verde will expand their book space into a community library, providing literacy support, cultural enrichment and life skills to the children of the village of Cobano and surrounding communities in rural Costa Rica.
Living in a rural part of Costa Rica, children lack the access and opportunity of those located in urban areas. In our surrounding area, the public schools do not include library space, and furthermore the community has watched as efforts to create and maintain space have been unsuccessful. There is no current library in town and our cultural space has been converted for COVID-19 related outreach.
Our dream is to expand our book space into a real, true library! We want to create for our students and the surrounding community a space to be able to explore and learn the love of reading. By providing a space to enhance and support literacy this will give children in this rural part of Costa Rica an opportunity to expand their education and see the possibilities of the future. We will offer a rich supply of books in multiple languages, offer 1:1 literacy support, and enrichment activities.
Living in a rural area presents challenges, and many times the children in the community do not have the same opportunity as those in urban areas. By expanding our book space, we will be able to open it up to community, allowing extra educational support to all children. Having this space will bring the community together and allow all members to gain valuable skill to project themselves forward.
