Books are awesome. They just are. I'm sure most of us have memories about our parents reading us bedtime stories, and imagining that we were in the stories as well. One of my favorite childhood memories was when my mother finally let me ride my bike to the library ALONE to return books and pick out new ones. I was terrified of course, but excited as well so I hopped on my big pink banana seat and off I went with my return books in my little white basket. There was a sense of freedom knowing that I could spend however much time I needed going through the books. The world was at my fingertips and I grasped it HARD!
Our children now have this opportunity as well. Before the library opens the kids are waiting at the door and peeking through the windows. The firtst 5 minutes of every day are complete chaos, but as soon as each child finds their book, it's silent apart from the whispers of children quietly reading out loud to themselves. Many of the chldren do nto speak english, so they will go through the story books tracing the illistrations with their fingers and making up stories to go with the pictures. How much simple joy the chidlren get from reading is a truly beautiful thing, and I an thankful to everyone who has helped us in making our libraries possible.
