Progress report

By Maria Mdenda | Fundraising and Advocacy Manager

At LGBT Voice Tanzania we are on a mission to help promote, support, defend and protect the interests and the general well-being of Gay, Lesbians, bisexual and Transgender people in Tanzania.

Over the past four months we have been working with a hugely impressive network of lawyers, psychologists and human rights activists to champion change and transform the lives of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Through our partnerships with GlobalGiving and our supports/donors, our programmes have had a transformational impact on hundreds LGBTQIA+ individuals in Tanzania. So here is a snapshot of LGBT Voice Tanzania`s highlights so far in 2023, and a sneak peek at some of our core focus areas!

In the past four months, we have been able to significantly  provided free legal aid  to 23  LGBTQIA+ individuals who  faced unjust arrests and detention . Each individual has their own story, and we believe that every single story matters. Without your help, these stories may have remained unheard and unnoticed.  Let's not stop at 23.

LGBT Voice Tanzania mandate to respond to the need and provide free essential trauma counseling services to LGBTQIA+ persons impacted by unjust arrests, detention and torture to rebuild their lives. Therefore the organizations has served 46 LGBTQIA+ individuals in the past four months, but we still continue because the counseling has to be continuous

Every day, we receive 3-10 urgent calls for emergency support to LGBTQIA+ in crisis. This includes immediate shelter, emotional support, relocation and legal guidance. But due to limited funding the organization can only support 2 people a month. With a spike in crisis calls, there is a need of increased funds so that we support more needy LGBTQIA+ individuals.

LGBT Voice Tanzania decided to invest in digital security because we needed increase our ability to prevent, respond and quickly recover from disrupt that occurred when our website was block by authorities. We had no option but to invest in a secure hosting of our website and also use Bifrost to unblock site so that it can be accessible country wide because we believe in the transformative digital power. With more and more individuals turning to online platforms to connect with one another, campaign, share stories, and support the causes they care about, it is crucial that LGBT Voice Tanzania has a strong digital presence as a powerful tool to build trust with its audiences.

A STORY FROM A BENEFICIARY (identity hidden)

I`m  a survivor, Threatened and beaten by my own father for embracing my true self, I was left on the verge of death. But, I found solace at LGBT Voice Tanzania, which has helped over 800 individuals like me find shelter and regain dignity. With your support, they are helping even more people who are in desperate need.

I am currently living in a situation where I fear for my safety daily. I've found a safe neighboring country to relocate to, thanks to LGBT Voice Tanzania is helping to ensure my escape and resettlement.”

There are still many individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community who need our support. We have made great strides, but there is much more work to be done. Your ongoing support will make this possible
