Progress report

By Maria Mdenda | Fundraising and Advocacy Manager

We are thrilled by the widespread support we received through April, Each contribution is making a big difference in the lives of LGBT we serve countrywide.

As stated in previous communication and reports our organization has become more active in the area of advocacy and providing free legal services to LGBT+ individuals in need , this is due to the increase of incidences of violence against LGBT+ countrywide. The eviction of Gay men,  arbitrary arrest and dentition of  Gay and Transgender women and also an increase in social violence where LGBT+ people are attacked and beaten. Honestly security threats are highly increasing.

Due to the worsening of the situation, we decided to increase our investment in the legal area by hiring one full time lawyer/Attorney   and 3others who work on part time because this is the most need service at the moment and that makes our legal budget alone to raise up to $19,000/= for the year 2022.

Our organization is working direct with local coordinators in 23 regions in Tanzania mainland by providing available local resources so that they can effectively help in solving the most pressing challenges and needs of the LGBT+ community in their areas. At the same time our full time lawyer with the help of the three part time lawyers are working hard to ensure that all LGBT+ individual are protected by the law and implementation our project named ENDING VIOLENCE BASED ON SEX ORIENTATION AND GENDER IDENTITY is moving well.

We are distributing educational materials to the people and communities we reach during this project , the 1000 copies we had  printed are finished but we must continue providing these material rich with scientific facts about homosexuality to ensure there is high understanding and  knowledge on the how and why LGBT people are not criminals and not unnatural people.

It is important to tell all of you and the whole world that we remain insecure as a minority organization advocating on behalf of LGBT+ people, and running the organization in rented premises especially when landlords are very inflexible, so we must always pay rent in time to avoid eviction and our lawyers must be always available to defend the organization and   the general well-being of Gay, Lesbians, bisexual and Transgender people in Tanzania.

Thanks for helping this happen. Thank you for contributing to this important cause. We still have a long way to go. Kindly continue standing with us and supporting our efforts for making Tanzania a better place for every LGBT person. We promote, support, defend and protect the interests and the general well-being of LGBT+ people in Tanzania. That is what we are doing and will continue doing with your help

A statement from Roy one of the beneficiary of our work.

My name is Roy 26 a human rights activist for LGBTIQ I risked my life by supporting a gay man who was raped by a group of people in my neighborhood, as a result, I have been asked to vacate the premises before they burn me in the house, I smelled petroleum around my window, and immediately I had to call the landlord who rescued the situation by begging them and giving them some amount of money, however despite that incidence still the landlord did not chase me away and instead, she advised me that my life was much more important than his house so asked me to leave.

I was completely frustrated and traumatized by that incident. So I reached LGBT Voice Tanzania for relocation and medical support, they immediately responded and I rescued but unfortunately some of the belongings I left back were stolen when it was heavily raining the door was broken, I couldn’t report the incident to the police station because of the fear of what would next because of harassment and intimidation.

I`m happy because LGBT Voice is doing whatever they can to help me relocate and resume to normal  life

Please continue supporting this important work
