This project will provide molecular-based tests in leukemia to the most vulnerable pediatric population, who are being treated in public hospitals across Venezuela and do not have the resources to access these specialized exams needed to direct their treatment. Patients will receive, at no cost to them, an early, precise and personalized diagnosis that will significantly improve their prognosis and response to treatment, as well as their quality of life
Leukemia is the most common cancer in children and teens, accounting for almost 1 out of 3 diagnosed cancers in this age group. An early, specific and individualized diagnosis will lead to successful treatment. In Venezuela very few public institutions perform molecular diagnostics for patients and the private laboratories that conduct these tests, do so at extremely high costs, which renders them inaccessible to the majority of the population
Provide a specialized and free diagnostic service based on molecular techniques, to allow individualized care and raise survival rates among these children with leukemia. This program not only benefits children with leukemia, but also their families, by relieving them from the economic burden and psychological stress that comes with not having access to the optimal treatment for their loved one
In the next 5 years, we plan to expand our program in molecular diagnostics to cover all public hospitals with cancer units across Venezuela and increase the number of beneficiaries to an estimated total of 4,500 patients and 18,000 family relatives. Our focus will also include development and standardization of new tests to improve treatment management
