The first concrete results

By Veronique Oge | Project manager

Dear donors, dear friends,

It has been a while since we last gave you un update about our project Let’s talk about our health. Today we are very happy to inform you about progress made, thanks to you and your donation.

We realized five short videos 2 to 3 minutes long about how we approach female health problems and which we show during the meetings. These videos start the discussion and make the participants react.

In one video, Aliet speaks with her neighbours and confides in them that she is worried about the health of her daughter who has abdominal pains and that she is going to take her for a consultation at a gynaecologist. Afterwards one of the neighbours reacts by saying: “her daughter is not married, why should she have female pains? I wanted to present her to my son but now I shall not do that because I do not need a sick person !”

After viewing the video the participants of the meeting are always asked the same question: What do you think of this movie?

The comments vary: certain stereotypes come back but generally the discussion always develops in an interesting way. The aim is to show why it is important that the girl speaks to her mother and that the mother gets an appointment for her daughter at a gynaecologist.

The specialists who are present at the meeting explain the risks and the consequences of late medical consultations. Our experience shows that when people who have similar problems and ask themselves the same questions it is easier for them to speak about it together and to find solutions.

We have already organized 3 meetings with girls and women and the results of these meetings are encouraging:

-  14 out of 45 girls or women have asked for the help,

-  30 women discovered self-palpation as a means to examine their breasts and have learnt who to practise it,

-  During a meeting, cysts were discovered in two women, who then went to see a doctor,

-  24 of the women declared that they would practise self-palpation regularly and would speak about it to their daughters,

-  4 girls understood that they had irregular menstrual cycles and that they had to speak about it to their mother and consult a doctor.

Dear friends

we sincerely thank you your support in 2017. We still need your help to pursue our program Let’s talk about our health in 2018 to make hundreds of persons aware and help them take care of their health.

We count on you and on your friends !
