"Since I learned how to better manage my periods, I'm no longer ashamed and I go to school even during my menstruation. I can track my dates, prepare in advance, and take care of my body properly. I feel confident, cleaner, and comfortable. I believe if every girl could receive this kind of education, no one would ever have to drop out of school because of menstruation again. I also learned to save money by using washable pads." Larissa, 15 years old, Betainomby, Toamasina, Madagascar
Shame, embarrassment, and the inability to handle their monthly periods in a safe and hygienic way prompts vulnerable girls in the urban and rural villages of Madagascar to stay home from school during their menstrual cycles and, often to drop out of school altogether. Unless they complete their education, these girls will never break the cycle of poverty into which they were born.
Build self-confidence among teenage girls like Larissa by teaching them about their maturing bodies. Empower them to manage their monthly periods in a hygienic way. Teach them to make their own washable, reusable sanitary pads. Encourage girls like Larissa to stay in school, set goals and develop positive plans.
The program has removed the social taboo around discussing menstrual hygiene in families and in the community. It is now an open health-related topic. Girls make their own washable, reusable pads which allows them to handle their periods in a sanitary way and also reduces household expenses. School absenteeism during menstruation among the 360 girls enrolled in the program in our partner schools dropped from almost 50% to 0% since the program began.
