Soraya is a nine-year-old girl from Syria. For eight years she has been staying in a Serbian reception camp in the south of the country.
No one would hope that after leaving their home country, Soraya and her family would spend so many years in one place, in the place they never wanted to be.
Her family, like many others, couldn`t reach the European country of their choice, where they already had family members. They stopped in Serbia, in one of the reception centers in 2016, hoping to find a way forward. Unfortunately, they were pushed back from the border with Hungary and sent back to the reception center in Serbia they left a few days before.
Soraya doesn’t even know how it looks to live with family in a home, like all of her schoolmates are used to. Soraya now wants to study and be part of the everyday life of her friends in Serbia.
She still has hope to have the same possibilities as the other children she is going to school with.
This New Year was welcomed by Soraya and her family in the collective center. So little happiness is available to children who haven’t been asked if they want to leave their homes.
Let’s bring some light to the lives of children stranded in the reception camps across Serbia. Not many things are available to them. Really little things for the school they are missing can make a big change for them.
Let’s put a smile on the faces of refugee children.
