When girls play sport, they get stronger; they challenge gender norms; they get the attention of their community; they build confidence and leadership skills. Women Win is using sport as a strategy to empower adolescent girls, including those least likely to get invited to play. It's our approach to making the world a more just and equitable place. Adolescence is a time of transition from childhood into adulthood, a time of growth and opportunity, when one can take active steps towards deciding one's future. However, gender discrimination, which girls already face in childhood, often becomes more pronounced as they near adulthood. The challenges girls have to contend with in their daily lives are obstacles to their future, inevitably posing a threat to their empowerment
Sport is an accelerator to leadership development. When a girl plays, she can: become physically and emotionally stronger, challenge restrictive gender norms, get access to a social support network, get out of the home, develop critical life skill, meet role models and find a safe space to grow. Women Win gives financial and other support to girl-serving organizations around the world to further their capacity to empower girls' and their communities through sport.
Women Win's work stems from a theory of change based on the fact that a well-designed sport program can build assets, provide access to resources, and develop agency through the practice of newly acquired skills. In short, when girls play sport, they have a better shot at thriving in life.
