We extend our sincere gratitude for the unwavering support provided to the LESPLAY (Learn, Speak, and Play) program, which continues to positively impact the lives of children in the Southwest region of Cameroon. Through our innovative approach to informal learning, play, and peer interaction, LESPLAY empowers children to identify real-world challenges and devise creative solutions. Our program includes life skills and entrepreneurship training, creative arts for learning and self-expression, and instruction on the use of digital tools and technologies. While we continue our regular weekly LESPLAY sessions at our Youth Resource Center on Community Field Road in Limbe, we also engage in partnerships with schools and local organizations to expand our reach and impact.
HIGHLIGHTS
1. IT Skills for Schools
In response to a critical shortage of IT training facilities in schools around Limbe, we have partnered with three local schools to provide training in computer and design for students in lower classes. Our survey revealed that many schools lack the necessary facilities for computer training, resulting in a shortage of skills in this domain. To address this, we have offered our center for free training sessions for students. Since April 2024, more than 100 students have received training in basic computer skills, graphic design, and web design at our center.
2. Digital Literacy Initiative with Girls Excel
SODEI partnered with Girls Excel to provide digital training for 20 young girls. Girls Excel is an organization dedicated to equipping adolescent girls and young women with the tools they need to address reproductive health and other challenges that threaten their human rights. This training program was designed to enhance the digital literacy skills of the participants, empowering them with essential knowledge and capabilities in a digital world. Through this initiative, the young girls gained valuable insights into various digital tools and platforms, enabling them to navigate and leverage technology effectively. The training also emphasized the importance of digital security and privacy, ensuring the girls are well-prepared to protect themselves online. This collaboration underscores our commitment to fostering the development of young women and supporting their journey towards empowerment and self-sufficiency.
3. Youth Socio-Professional and Economic Integration Workshop Series
As part of our commitment to equipping children with essential life skills, we introduced a series of socio-professional and economic integration workshops. These workshops aim to identify and develop the skills and natural talents of children and youths beyond our immediate community. We have identified focal points in various communities around Limbe who specialize in different talent-oriented activities, IT, design, sports, music, and leadership. So far, our talent clusters have engaged over 50 young people in mentorship and training.
Conclusion
We are deeply grateful for the ongoing support from GlobalGiving, which has made these initiatives possible. Through our combined efforts, we continue to make a significant impact on the lives of children and youths in the Southwest region of Cameroon. We look forward to further expanding our programs and reaching even more young people in the coming months.
