Summary

Learn, Speak and Play (LESPLAY) is a SODEI project that supports children in Limbe, in the southwest region of Cameroon, to develop their full potentials and discover their talents and abilities. We provide training in computers and digital equipment, life skills, and creative arts, along with a space for play and peer interaction, where children can share their experiences through storytelling and receive counselling. Supporting this project provides art, computer, and life skills training.

Challenge

In Limbe, dropout rates are increasing due to poor classroom conditions and an inadequate student to teacher ratio. The 2016 outbreak of violence in the English-speaking areas of Cameroon has forced thousands of children out of school, with 100+ schools burnt down. Limited internet, electricity and computers further limited childhood education during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This lack of quality education for years jeopardizes their futures and the development of our communities.

Solution

Learn, Speak and Play (LESPLAY) provides an alternative for children experiencing disruptions in normal school education by engaging them in creative informal learning, participatory action, a space for peer interaction and play. LESPLAY employs creative techniques including drawing, painting and photography; and group techniques such as role play and participatory action. Through tutoring and participatory action, young participants improve their skills in math, public speaking and IT.

Long-Term Impact

We aim to inspire young people to learn life skills, develop a sense of purpose, empathy and social competence which will help them learn and actively contribute to the well-being of their greater community. Education has a vital role to play in the creation and sustenance of a culture of peace and resilience in every society. Our work is inspired by our commitment to push young people to discover their talents and abilities as well as to create and make use of opportunities.
