LESPLAY: Quarterly Project Report

Our Learn, Speak and Play (LESPLAY) program engages children in the Southwest region of Cameroon through creative informal learning, play and peer interaction. The program attracts both in and out-of-school children, including those experiencing learning disruptions. The conflict in the Anglophone regions has disrupted schooling for many children in the Southwest region. Interventions such as ours were needed to provide alternatives for reorientation, psychosocial support and an opportunity to learn new skills. LESPLAY employs techniques including creative arts, craft, and technology. Through LESPLAY children identify real-world challenges and proffer creative ways of tackling them. They also learn life skills and the use of digital tools and technologies.

We recently introduced a cyber security, coding, and robotics training project to our LESPLAY program. The project was launched on March 11, 2023, in partnership with CODAM Technologies with 15 LESPLAY project beneficiaries in attendance. The project is carried out in line with our objective to enhance tech skills, increase interest in STEM careers and promote safety online for program beneficiaries.  So far, we have carried out three introductory sessions where young participants were sensitized on cyber security and introduced to the basic concepts of coding and robotics.

Children today spend a substantial amount of time online for either educational purposes or entertainment. The internet offers many opportunities and poses several risks. Given their age, it is difficult for them to assess the opportunities and risks of using the internet and digital systems, even as more and more of their lives are digitally recorded, potentially creating long-term effects on their privacy and safety.

From April 30 , 2023, our LESPLAY program for Bangem will provide entrepreneurship lessons aimed at teaching young people not only to identify and make use of but create opportunities for themselves. Venture Lab has offered a full scholarship on their “Topics on Entrepreneurship Curriculum” to our LESPLAY beneficiaries. This gives us access to the full curriculum and lesson material. LESPLAY beneficiaries will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning, identify and tackle real-world challenges, build confidence, and help develop problem-solving skills.

Every kind donation received from supporters like you is making a difference in educating young people and prepping them to compete in the modern economy.   Together, we can continue to inspire and empower girls, young women and boys through education.

PS. From April 3-7, when you give up to $50 to support education for young girls and boys in Limbe, GlobalGiving will match your generosity at 50% for the #LittleByLittle campaign. Your $50 donation will contribute towards the purchase of a 1 year Adobe Creative Cloud software license for creative design training or provide 1 month of WIFI for our Centre.
