Lesedi la Batho ("Light for the People") offers social relief and hope for people living in poverty-stricken, underserved areas of our community with little opportunity to improve their lives and become independent of hand outs. We believe every person has the right to basic commodities and the ability to provide for their children. The strains and restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic devastated families who were already struggling - and they need a helping hand now more than ever before.
Informal settlements in South Africa were formed during Apartheid years (pre-1994) when people of colour were forcibly removed to remote, rural areas outside of the cities and their resources. A generation later, much of our black population continues to live in poverty with little opportunity for a better future. Essential resources are limited in these areas, and many cannot afford access to resources in the city.
By offering a helping hand to those most in need, they are given hope for the future and the ability to strive beyond a life dependent on handouts. Lesedi la Batho Community Centre offers skills training, job placement assistance, small business development and a free day care service to further assist people on their journey to financial independence and self-actualisation - which cannot be achieved without first offering the most basic assistance.
Our vision is to bridge the social gap in our country and see the people of our underserved community become independent, purposeful and contributing members of society. This long-term goal not only seeks to improve the lives of the individuals we work with, but to see our community as a whole become a thriving, economically-stimulated place of opportunity for all.
