APLE's Victim Support and Assistance Program focuses on providing high-quality and timely legal and social support for child victims of sexual abuse and exploitation in Cambodia. APLE enables child victims to pursue justice without further trauma and achieve stable lives. APLE's Community Industry and Media Engagement Program provides awareness raising and training sessions to empower communities and build their resilience against Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation.
In Cambodia, 5.6% of boys and 4.4% of girls are estimated to have experienced sexual abuse before they turn 18. Among children who live and work on the street the estimated prevalence is as much as 40%. A general lack of awareness and resources make it difficult for the Criminal Justice System to respond to cases of sexual abuse and exploitation in an efficient manner, while the general public lacks knowledge on how to protect children.
This project finances legal representation, protective orders, case preparation, and accompaniment through police interviews and court hearings. It also includes child-friendly briefings, safe waiting spaces, and interpreter services. Outcomes include enhanced due child-sensitive process, higher conviction rates, and reduced stress on survivors.
Sustained investment in child-centered legal support creates long-term gains for survivors, families, and communities. Children who experience respectful, well-supported justice are more likely to stay engaged, recover, and reintegrate, improving life outcomes. As police, prosecutors, and judges gain experience with briefings, safeguards, and coordinated support, these practices become embedded in SOPs, training curricula, and budgets. The result is a resilient, scalable model.
