6 year old Arwa comes back from school to do her everyday homework in a room she shares with her two sisters. Their room is dark due to lack of electricity. She sits to do her homework sharing a light of a candle with her siblings. To help families like Arwa's, Save Youth Future Society will install LED lights for 25 family homes in the Beach (Shati) refugee camp in the Gaza Strip to help vulnerable families living in darkness and to prevent deadly accidents from candles affecting mainly childre
The Beach (Shati) refugee camp is one of the most vulnerable and marginalized areas with many families suffering from significantly bad economic situation, even in comparison to other parts of the Gaza Strip. It was heavily affected during 2014 hostilities which added to previously existing vulnerabilities. Therefore, the project targets the families with special attention to children affected by their family's bad situation by providing LED lights as a safe method to lighting up their homes.
Purchase and installation of LED lights will provide the families with a very needed source of light during long hours of electricity cuts. The provided LED system allows for charging the lamps in order to use them for lighting up the house in a safe way, avoiding risk of deadly fires from candles when there is no electricity.
The project will ensure safety for children and their families who are too often fall victims of deadly fire accidents. It also allows children to study during long winter nights and for families to spend time together on family activities that they could not enjoy when there is no light. Moreover, LED lights are more sustainable - families do not have to spend the scarce family financial resources on candles, and instead can spend this money on food, medicine or school materials for children.
