In 2022, the vital health services of the Lebanese Red Cross are needed more than ever as more and more of the population is falling under poverty line. According to the World Bank, more than 80% of the population in Lebanon is now considered to be poor, and have trouble accessing basic healthcare services.
The LRC, thanks to the support of its partners and donors, is still able to maintain the ambulance response and blood transfusion services free of charge and available to all those who need it. More than 200,000 persons per year benefit from these life-saving services every year, and the numbers are increasing year by year as less hospitals are able to receive and process blood units.
In addition, during the past few months, the LRC has initiated its primary healthcare scale-up program. The aim of this program is to ensure that every person who needs basic healthcare (consultation with a physician and primary health medicine) in Lebanon, is able to access it. This has become extremely relevant because families are now paying on average more than 30% of their income in order to cover basic healthcare needs as they have become extremely expensive.
To date, the number of visits to LRC's Primary Health Centers has increased by 18% compared to 2022. In coming reports, we will continue to provide these figures as we gradually increase our capacity to provide quality healthcare services to those who need it most.
