The project supports six public schools in Balkh Province in northern Afghanistan and establishes 12 community-based learning centers. 4,840 students are reached in schools and 720 children and young people in the learning centers. Together with our long-standing local partner OHW we renovate school buildings, improve water and sanitation facilities, train teachers and create safe learning environments. We also offer psychosocial support and promote income-generating activities for 40 mothers.
Balkh is a rural and agricultural area where over 65% live in poverty. Many children drop out to work long, hard hours and face abuse. Even before the Taliban, tens of thousands had no formal schooling; girls' exclusion and returning children from Pakistan/Iran worsened this further. At the six project schools, 4,840 children study under difficult conditions, the schools lacking secure roofs, protective walls, clean drinking water and sanitary facilities, leading to absenteeism and dropouts.
At the project schools, urgent repairs are carried out. Community-based learning centers are established and fully equipped in 12 communities, providing disadvantaged children with an alternative pathway to education. The centers follow the national curriculum and, where possible, facilitate the transition into the formal school system. In the learning centers, learning and social spaces are established in accordance with local conditions and implemented in a culturally sensitive manner.
Through this project, we provide disadvantaged children in rural communities with access to education, protection, therapeutic support and opportunities for the future. To improve the financial situation of families in the long-term, 40 mothers of children in the learning centers are supported in building their own income. Awareness campaigns reaching 9,000 people and training for 30 officials and 360 parents embed education and child protection in a sustainable way within the communities.
