With the Liberian government announcing the reopening of schools following the Ebola outbreak, many families lack the basic resources necessary to send their children to school. Many children cannot attend school due to deaths in the family and/or a severe lack of resources. To buttress the government's efforts to keep every school safe and prepared for future emergencies, the "Learning Safe Project" has been developed to provide immediate assistance to children to return to school.
Education in Liberia has severely deteriorated since the Ebola outbreak in March 2014. There are approximately 1.4 million students out of school leaving the doors of 4,413 schools closed. The government of Liberia in conjunction with the Ministry of Education is struggling to reopen schools in the midst of widespread fear and anxiety throughout the country. It is important that schools are opened in a safe and secure manner.
The Learning Safe Project will solve these problems in 3 ways: 1.Design a strategy and plan that includes reaching out to children that need assistance to get back to school. 2. Set up Wash stations at 214 schools in 3 districts to avoid the further spread of the Ebola virus. 3. Create awareness of the importance of the Safe School Protocols that outline important safety requirements for the reopening of all schools.
The investment in education is the most effective way to support Liberia's children in the aftermath of the recent national health emergency. This project will encourage greater school attendance and assure the safety and security of the nation's schools. We urgently need your help to send children who have missed school in Liberia since the Ebola outbreak back to school.
