The days of an unhygienic school environment are almost over in Barrio San Pablo! The architectural plans for the new school bathrooms, septic system, and handwashing station are complete, as well as the soil analysis, and construction is in progress right now, beginning with the septic system. The old system was leaking raw sewage onto the surrounding ground during the rainy season (which is most of the school year in Guatemala). The new system is designed well and takes into account the level of anticipated usage, the soil characteristics, the neighboring properties, and the climate in Chisec, and should last for many, many years.
Attached are some architectural drawings showing the three new lavatories, the septic well, the handwashing station (pila) and the water piping system. The water source will be pressurized via gravity - the water tanks will be located on the roof of the storage section of the bathroom structure. Also attached are two photos of the initial progress (last week) of the septic tank excavation.
The final photos will be provided in a future report once construction is complete.
