Provide Hygienic Bathrooms for Guatemalan Students

Problem Statement

Public schools in Guatemala, especially in the indigenous areas, are poorly equipped and funded. Poor facilities are a major contributor to the high dropout rate during elementary school (about 50%).  One of these schools is in Barrio San Pablos in a part of Chisec, Guatemala. AgInno Institute has already provided a new kitchen for the school to enable them to provide food for the children. However, the current bathrooms on the school property are very old and nonfunctional, flooding onto the surrounding school grounds after heavy rains. Additionally, the students have no place to adequately wash their hands after using the facilities.

Campaign Objectives

Provide new, functional, hygienic bathrooms, a septic system, and a hand-washing station for this school. This will enable the students to focus on their school work and learning and have a sanitary educational environment.

Campaign Goal $6000 for a bathroom building with three toilets, a septic system, and a hand-washing station for the primary school in Barrio San Pablo, to provide significantly improved hygiene for the students and school facility.

Results

This project was fully funded as a result of generous donations received during the Giving Tuesday event at the beginning of December of this year. The project will begin following approval of the final design in January. The objective is to complete the bathrooms prior to the new school term. Classes will resume in February after the winter break (Guatemalan students have a winter break similar to the summer break in the United States), and the students will be able to use the new facilities at that time.  The school director is excited to be able to improve the health of his students and the education experience in his school, and he is very grateful for the generosity of all our donors.
