Language Program for Refugee and Migrant Children

During the current reporting period, the Language Program for Refugee and Migrant Children continued to provide Bulgarian language support to refugee and migrant children, with a focus on helping newly arrived children develop basic communication skills and begin their educational and social integration in Bulgaria.

An important development during this period was the entrollment of new children from Iran, Afghanistan, and Palestine to the program. The children participated in introductory Bulgarian language training adapted to their individual needs and previous educational experience. The initial sessions focused on basic vocabulary, everyday communication, greetings, introductions, and essential language structures that children can use in their daily lives.

As part of the program’s educational support, each student received an individual learning package containing a copy of the “ABC – First Steps” Bulgarian as a foreign language learning workbook, developed specifically for refugee and migrant children. Each child also received a copy of the illustrated vocabulary book “Words in Pictures”, which supports vocabulary acquisition through visual learning and is particularly useful for children with limited Bulgarian language skills.

Providing children with their own learning materials allows them to continue practicing outside the classroom and supports a more consistent and individualized learning process. The combination of structured language instruction and accessible educational resources is an important first step toward greater confidence, participation, and successful integration into the Bulgarian education system and wider community.
