The English Language for Empowerment project by Generation Aid in Kalobeyei Settlement, Turkana County, empowers refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Africa, especially women, girls, and children, through a 6-12 month English training program. Breaking language barriers improves access to education, jobs, and small businesses, while fostering social inclusion and dignity. With a $10,000 budget, activities include tailored courses, trained facilitators, cultural and digital tools
Refugees in Kalobeyei, especially women, girls, and children from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and other African countries, face serious challenges due to limited English skills. This barrier restricts access to education, jobs, and community integration, while increasing isolation and vulnerability. Afghan women and girls fleeing Taliban persecution remain unable to study or engage fully. The lack of structured English training keeps refugees trapped in dependence and exclusion.
This project is to tackle the language barrier faced by the Afghan and African refugees in Kalobeyei by providing structured English training. Afghans, especially women, girls, and children, will gain communication skills for daily life, education, and work. Improved proficiency will open access to learning, jobs, and business, reduce isolation, and empower women and girls to advocate for themselves, fostering dignity, self-reliance, stronger community integration, and long-term resilience
The long-term impact of this project will be profound. By improving English proficiency, refugees, especially women, girls, and children, will gain access to education, vocational training, and economic opportunities. This will reduce social isolation and strengthen integration with host communities. Women and girls, in particular, will be empowered with tools for self-advocacy and independence. Ultimately, the project will foster dignity, resilience, and sustainable self-reliance among refugees
