English Language Program: Building Confidence and Opportunity in Kalobeyei
When Generation Aid first announced plans to establish an English language program in Kalobeyei, the response from the refugee community demonstrated the strong demand for accessible language education. Refugees and community members recognized that stronger English skills could open doors to education, employment, communication, and greater participation in everyday life. Building on this enthusiasm, Generation Aid has now moved from planning and community mobilization to establishing the program and beginning instruction.
The English program has been developed to accommodate learners with different levels of experience. Classes are offered at Beginner, Pre-Intermediate, and Intermediate levels, allowing participants to learn in an environment suited to their existing abilities and progress over time. The program focuses on practical English skills that participants can use in their daily lives, education, and professional development. Once a decent level of English is established, participants can sign up for the digital literacy course also offered by Generation Aid, from there expanding vocational skills and opportunity.
The establishment of the program represents an important step in Generation Aid's broader commitment to creating accessible learning opportunities for refugees. For many participants, English language development complements other vocational and digital skills they are gaining through Generation Aid's programs, helping them build a stronger foundation for pursuing employment, further education, and self-reliance.
Continued support through GlobalGiving will allow Generation Aid to sustain the English classes, reach additional learners, and strengthen the program as demand continues to grow. By investing in language education, donors are helping create opportunities for refugees in Kalobeyei to communicate with greater confidence, access new opportunities, and continue building skills for their futures.
