Finding Their Voice Through Storytelling

By Sharon Doherty | Project Leader

At EEESMA School for the Deaf, helping students develop the confidence to express themselves and advocate for their needs is an essential part of their education. Because many Deaf children arrive with limited access to language at home, the school places a strong emphasis on developing communication skills, emotional awareness, and self-expression through Mexican Sign Language (LSM).

Through guided conversations, role-playing, and everyday classroom interactions, students learn to identify and communicate their feelings, understand personal boundaries, and express their needs with confidence and respect. These skills provide the foundation for self-advocacy and help students build healthy relationships with peers, teachers, and family members.

A powerful example of this learning took place during a school-wide study of The Diary of Anne Frank. Students of all ages explored Anne's story through reading, discussion, a detailed model of her hidden living quarters, and a traveling exhibit featuring artifacts and historical displays. The project inspired meaningful conversations about courage, human rights, and the importance of speaking up for oneself and others.

As students grow, they are encouraged to take an active role in their own learning by identifying personal goals, sharing their ideas, and reflecting on their progress. Many older students also step into leadership roles by presenting projects in LSM, helping organize classroom activities, and mentoring younger peers. These opportunities build confidence and reinforce an important message: their voices matter, their perspectives are valued, and they have the ability to shape their future.

Thanks to your support, Deaf children are gaining more than an education—they are developing the language, confidence, and leadership skills that will empower them throughout their lives.
