English Classes a Success!!!

Attentive kids in English class

Children at Kiwanis Village since April 2024 started to received English classes every Saturday to improve their English level and help them with their English homework that were given by their teachers at school during the week.

We are very pleased to know the children were excited to be in classes and they received support not only from the English teachers but also from Kiwanis teachers too. Thanks to your support we could give them a lunch every day so they can have something to eat during the English course.

Conducting classes

The students were separated into two groups: children and pre-adolescents.

Each classroom had the support and direction of two teachers, who created their own work materials (presentations, games or mini dynamics). Within the classes, the teachers presented visual material for their development and each activity they changed between classrooms to carry out more advanced activities with the pre-adolescents.

-Unit 4: Plurals (Regular and irregular) Pages: 18 - 20

-Unit 5: (Subject Pronouns) Pages: 24 - 25

-Unit 6: BE - Present Simple (Pages 32 - 34)

-Unit 7: Have got (Pages 35 - 36)

Upon passing and concluding 2-3 units, evaluations were carried out, either written or orally, to evaluate the students' knowledge. Each class had its own recreation space where a snack was given to students and teachers.

We are now looking for more volunteers from the University to keep the classes going.

Kiwanis English School kicks off!

We recruited four students from Don Boscoe University to volunteer every Saturday morning to teach kids at the Kiwanis Village English The students are volunteering their time but getting social service hours accredited by the University and we provide transportation for the volunteers and lunch (different every Saturday.) for the volunteers and 24 students.

The first session was held on Saturday, April 27. During the day, the presentation of the English class project took place. Then, the students were divided according to their age and the workbooks were delivered, along with a notebook for each student. Additionally, that day the students learned the alphabet, the pronunciations of each of the letters, the correct way to spell words or their names, and basic vocabulary. We divided the sutdents into a younger and older group.

The second class was taught on May 04. As of this session, both rooms already had a projector to present the audiovisual material to be used. Also, they reviewed the topics of the first week and learned about numbers, how to say their age, prices, years, etc.

The third class took place on May 11 and the educators continued with the learning of numbers and the work to be done in the workbook so that the pupils learn the correct writing of numbers. Likewise, a review of the correct order of the numbers when saying them was carried out.

On Saturday, May 18.students were introduced to the use of articles “A - An.” and their correct use along with consonants and vowels. During this class, the teachers carried out different activities to have a better understanding of this topic, among which are: The presentation of videos, the use of audios, and the resolution of the exercises assigned in the workbook.

Concluding with the day on May 25, carrying out the corresponding evaluations of the 4 classes received and ending the first period of Kiwanis English Project.The exams that were carried out were oral and written. Grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, word order, spelling, and handwriting were evaluated. In addition, a listening section was included to know the percentage that the children have improved in the listening part.

These classees are very expensive in the area and the 24 students selected are actually learning English as a result of this effort and all of your donations made it possible! Thank YOU!
