Dear Himalayanlife family, friends and supporters,
HimalayanLife is building a primary/secondary school for 100 students in the Yangri Valley. The school has boarding facilities for half of the students, making the school effectively a regional education center. Hence the school’s name: YANGRI ACADEMIC CENTER.
While the Ripaar Minischool continues to provide bridge-classes to children (grade 1-3), construction for the envisioned regional school YAC (Yangri Academic Center) has commenced. The land for the school has been purchased, registration at national and district level are under way, and the first 3-classroom pod is under construction.
The design for the school, is unique in Nepal: it is a wood framed building with earthquake bracing providing high resistance against future earthquakes. The school will boast large, bright classrooms. The timber for the structure is all from local jungles, mostly from trees fallen in the earthquake. The timber is being milled on site, which is a time consuming but necessary aspect of the construction process. Likewise are the main beams for the building produced on-site - most likely the first time ever glue-lam fabrication in Nepal.
Thus the dream is taken shape: a school which will provide quality education to the children of Nepal, particularly those affected so badly and aversely by the earthquake. A school with buildings and an environment conductive to learning. A school with teachers who are excited about education, instilling the joy of learning in students.
We look forward to keeping you posted on the progress of our expansion in the Yangri valley.
From all of us at Himalayanlife, a very BIG thank you!
