The library constructed at the Khe Sanh Primary School is benefiting elementary students of this rural mountainous area in western Quang Tri Province. Hundreds of disadvantaged ethnic minority children now have access to books and computers. Mobile library outreach programs are being developed to extend learning opportunities to 635 students at schools located in the Thanh commune of Huong Hoa District southwest of Khe Sanh near the Laos border.
No library existed in the rural district of Huong Hoa until GlobalGiving donors funded construction of the Khe Sanh Primary School Library in 2013. Ethnic minority children in nearby communities have little access to the facility due to limited transportation. Mobile library service from the main school at Khe Sanh to a satellite school at Pa Nho has been successful. Expansion of the mobile library program will provide more children with learning opportunities.
A library mission will provide these students with a positive learning environment. It will also promote literacy as a key to lifelong learning for over 1000 students enrolled at outlying schools in the Huong Hoa District. The library mission will also provide the district's teachers with additional resources for curriculum design and implementation.
The library mission will be a cornerstone in the long term education of the children in Khe Sanh region. It will help to bridge the gap between these poor rural children and students in the more developed areas of the country. GCSF believes investment in infrastructure and education will aid community development in western Quang Tri Province.
